The FR-S, which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport; is Scion's definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car wîth exceptionally balanced performance and handling, compelling style, flexible utility and surprising MPG.

'Serving as a laboratory for Toyota, Scion is always experimenting wîth new things,' said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. 'The brand is iconic wîth the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking wîth the iQ. The FR-S will no doubt serve as the halo car, expanding Scion into a new dimension of driving performance.'

The FR-S is a true 'scion,' born into a lengthy history of Toyota performance cars and motorsports. The sports car is most inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning '8-6' in Japanese. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe was lightweight and well balanced, making it a solid choice for driving enthusiasts.

Inspired by the AE86, the FR-S is designed around the core goal of achieving, 'Pure Balance.' The balance begins wîth the strategic use of the world's only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine's compact size and flat shape allow it to be mounted mid-ship and extremely low, giving the car a dynamically favorable front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47 and a low center of gravity comparable to some exotic supercars.

The FR-S's 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is the result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru. The partnership begins by combining Subaru's newly developed horizontally opposed engine and Toyota's cutting edge D-4S injection system that incorporates both direct and port injection. The D-4S system, partnered wîth a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, results in an impressive 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

'We all know that it's not hard to make horsepower and torque, but it is hard to do all that and still achieve impressive fuel economy,' Hollis §äid. 'The FR-S accomplishes all three.'

The flat-four mates wîth either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Power is transferred to the pavement via a limited-slip differential.

The idea of 'Pure Balance' is further realized by the FR-S's lightweight design and compact size. The combination allows the car to be quick and nimble into and out of corners, wîth dynamic maneuverability and confident handling. The coupe's weight is kept to a minimum by utilizing an aluminum hood, a solid roof, and by featuring a trunk design instead of a hatchback.

The FR-S's low weight is matched wîth a dynamically tuned suspension setup consisting of MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone system in the rear. Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels and ventilated disc brakes are on all four corners.

The fierce exterior of the FR-S is a solid reflection of its inner power. The profile, inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, reveals a hood and roof-line that is remarkably sleek and low, giving it an aerodynamic shape that channels air cleanly over to the top. The low stance continues to exaggerate the coupe's menacing face, which is made up of sharp lines, a wide mouth and angular headlights. The aggressive front fenders protrude upward and boast the iconic ‘86' piston emblem, which highlights the car's AE86 heritage as well as its unique new boxer engine. The rear fascia sits low and wide, wîth aerodynamic lower treatments that surround the sporty dual exhaust system. LEDs illuminate the edgy taillights, while center-mounted backup lights finish the muscular design.

The FR-S's interior features a 2+2 seating configuration that is designed wîth both form and function in mind. The front seats are mounted extremely low and are comfortable yet assertive, while the rear seat folds down flat, creating flexible space. The large center-mounted tachometer is the focus of the three-gauge cluster, keeping the driver informed of the engine's vitals. Speed is monitored by both digital and analog gauges.

2012 Aston Martin Virage

Ronda, Spain • Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez obviously takes serious F. Scott Fitzgerald’s admonition that “The rich are different than you and me.” Or, at the very least, he certainly thinks the rich who buy Aston Martins are different than you and me.

Bez takes exception to a question wondering what specifically might be different about the new Virage tested here from the DB9 that now ranks below it and the full-zoot DBS that still tops the Aston Martin range. He contends that Aston Martin buyers don’t compare their car’s specifications, performance or any other criteria to any other, competitive brand or not. Of course, having fielded numerous questions from current and prospective owners of the company’s lesser Vantage range as to how their V8 Astons compare with equivalently priced Porsches and the like, I’m, shall we say, a little skeptical of Bez’s claim of unfettered brand loyalty. Believe it or not, even those shopping for $140,000 sports cars sometimes have a sense of budget and value.

But he may have a point when it comes to the company’s more august products — the V12-powered DB series. Once one moves into the $206,765-plus range, where all the long-wheelbase 2+2 Astons reside, I think the typical customer simply buys what makes him or her feel good — the car that strikes their fancy, whatever that fancy might be. Of course, owning what usually is a small fleet of cars — as the truly wealthy often do — means that if one of these dream cars doesn’t fulfill a specific attribute, there’s probably another in the (multi-car) garage that does. So, if what Bez is really trying to say is that cars such as the new Virage fulfill a specific range of “wants” and therefore don’t have to be justified in the practical terms forced upon the merely affluent, then perhaps there’s a point to his intransigence.

Certainly, I would make an argument that, were I suddenly as rich as Croesus (or Bill Gates, his modern-day successor), I might have a Virage in fleet just to hear that V12’s glorious roar. Oh, there are those who will claim that a flat-plane crankshaft Ferrari V8 is more sonorous or some Maserati more sporting, but they — and this almost certainly a “tell” of my aged status — are just a little too boy racerish for me. Every time I hear a 458 roar by, I always wonder whether the driver just graduated from one of those slammed Civics with a tomato-can-sized exhaust. The Aston Martin V12, on the other hand, is a model of civility and decorum, all sweetness and light and not disturbing anyone while it trundles — almost regally — along side streets.

That is, until one puts pedal to proverbial metal and the revs climb above 4,000 rpm when a little flapper valve opens up in the exhaust system, offering all those spent combustion gases a more direct route to the tailpipe. Then there’s a glorious roar as 12 well choreographed pistons all syncopate to a most provocative rhythm, one that I find the most alluring in motorcars today (taking over from my previous favourite, the 1992 BMW M5 in-line six). The Virage’s exhaust plumbing, says Ian Minards, the Aston Martin engineer in charge of such things, is slightly different than the more overtly sporty DBS, but I can’t tell any difference. All I know is that I drove the damned thing everywhere with both windows rolled all the way down just so I could hear the exhaust roar every time the tach tipped past 4,000 rpm.

Said roar is, of course, accompanied by some serious ripping, the Virage’s version of the 6.0-litre V12 produces a heady 490 horsepower (base DB9s make 470 hp while the more aggressive DBS boasts 510). Combined with 420 pound-feet of torque, it’s enough to motivate the Virage with alacrity. Even combined with a relatively old-tech six-speed automatic transmission (actually transaxle as the gearbox is mounted in the rear), that’s good enough to push the 1,785-kilogram Virage coupe to 100 kilometres an hour in just 4.6 seconds and top out at 299 km/h.

What those mere numbers don’t illustrate, though, is the utter flexibility of the big V12 (originally conceived, by the way, as two Ford Duratec 3.0L V6s mated to a common block). Unlike the smaller-displacement Aston V8, which thrives (and requires) high revs, the V12 is a veritable torque monster, as happy at 3,000 rpm as 6,000, save, naturally, the ripping exhaust note exiting the tailpipes. Where the Vantage S tested last week is frantic, the Virage is all about that wonderful trait usually attributed to Jaguars — pace with grace. This is an absolutely splendid powerplant. The closest one could come to proclaiming a fault would be Aston’s rather abrupt 6,800-rpm rev limiter, which puts the kibosh on the fun just as the party seems to be hitting top gear.

Like the engine, the Virage’s chassis calibration lies somewhere between the base DB9 and the raucous DBS. Like all DBs (indeed, all Aston Martins regardless of size), it’s built on the robust, bonded-aluminum VH platform that, even in convertible format (yes, the Virage is available as a Volante), is impressively rigid.

Again, like the other DBs, the Virage has Aston’s adaptive five-position suspension system, though this latest is an updated version that offers more delineation between the Normal and Sport modes. It means that the Virage can, at once, luxuriate and strafe. Admittedly, the available range of damper compliance is not so great that Aston can coddle like a Lexus or minimize roll as well as a Ferrari or even the stiffly suspended Vantage S. But there is plenty of ability in both areas, befitting a car with the goal of transporting its occupants great distances with as much dispatch and comfort as possible.

There will be no lack of the latter inside the new Virage. Oh, one could complain that the vestigial rear seats are truly a joke, or that the front buckets’ adjustability is not as wide- ranging as offered in a typical Mercedes-Benz. But, the Virage is plenty comfortable nonetheless, the seats both cushioning and supportive and, combined with the compliant suspension, quite a sumptuous place to while away the hours.

The Bridge of Weir leather treatment is hedonistic, there’s a crystal ashtray (well, now just a receptacle since the dashboard’s cigarette lighter has made way for a retractable pen) and there’s a magnificent Bang & Olufsen stereo system on offer with 1,000 watts of eardrum-piercing decibels and nifty, dashboard-mounted retractable tweeters à la Audi S8.

The one true flaw within the Virage cabin is its navigation system. The Garmin system may indeed be updated as Aston claims, but the screen is too small, it’s poorly angled and its functionality and controls are simply poor. Considering the strides made in automotive satellite navigation systems in recent years, it’s a travesty to pay (approximately) $225,000 for an automobile with a navi system barely superior to the ones offered for motorcycles.

Nonetheless, that estimated sticker price of $225,000 is something of a bargain in the DB lineup. It’s a lot closer to the DB9’s $206,765 than the DBS’s $309,530, despite being markedly superior to the base car and not far in arrears of the top-range model. Indeed, despite Bez’s comments that Aston buyers don’t compare, I think most will look at that relatively paltry markup over the DB9 and see a bargain. Methinks the new Virage will quickly supplant the base DB as the Aston of choice.

2011 Acura MDX

In the world of luxury SUV’s, the Acura MDX doesn’t quite grab the amount of attention most car magazines devote to its BMW and Mercedes competition-which is unfortunate. The MDX, Acura’s first serious attempt at an SUV debuted as a 2001 model. The second, and current generation MDX went on sale as a 2007, and in 2010 was treated to an exterior refresh to closer tie in to the rest of the Acura line, as well as a new engine. So while the competition grabs the headlines, we at The Garage were interested in how Acura’s Canadian-made MDX holds up. Read on to find out!

Taken as a whole, the MDX is a handsome, if somewhat unassuming vehicle with one obvious exception-the angular front end with the buck-tooth grille. Critics for years have lauded Acuras as fine automobiles that looked good but lacked a cohesive design language. Acura has apparently taken that sentiment to heart, as that nose is shared across the Acura line. If anything, you know an MDX when it is coming towards you. And while the sharply angled nose may not suit everyone, there is no denying the high quality construction. One particular highlight of the exterior were the beautifully designed 19″ wheels, which come as part of the Advance Package.

Inside, the MDX provides a welcoming cabin. Build quality and the standard of materials are absolutely what one would expect from Acura, but after a week with the MDX, it felt more like an extraordinarily equipped Honda than a bona-fide luxury SUV. What I wanted from being inside the MDX was to feel…special, and I simply did not get that sense. The lack of “oohs and aahs” from occupants seemed to confirm this. The Acura was flawless on an out of state weekend trip with my family, and seat comfort cannot be faulted. The high number of buttons on the center stack may be off-putting at first, but at no time was I unable to quickly adjust climate, nav, or stereo settings when needed.

All MDX’s share one powertrain, a 3.7L V-6 rated at 300hp-Acura’s most powerful engine ever (the same powerplant is used in the RL sedan), teamed to a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. All MDX’s use Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, which can adjust power delivery from the front to rear, and between the rear wheels for better handling. The new for 2010 V-6 is, as one would expect from Acura, silky smooth. Acceleration is about what you would expect from a high-end V-6 SUV, but the turbocharged Cadillac SRX we tested felt more explosive in passing situations. With fuel economy ratings of 16/21mpg city/highway, the MDX is in line with the competition. As for handling, the MDX was excellent, feeling smaller than it was. From the driver’s seat, you would never guess you were driving a vehicle with three rows of seating.

The 2011 Acura MDX starts at $42,580, and comes standard with XM Radio, power heated front seats, power tailgate and power moonroof. Our test MDX also included the Tech Package, which adds navigation, voice recognition, multi-view rear camera, surround sound stereo and three-zone climate control. Also added was the Advance Package, giving you the Active Damper System, Collision Mitigation Braking System, ventilated leather sport seats, adaptive cruise control, the 19″ alloys we adored, and auto-leveling xenon HID headlights. Finally, for the kiddies the MDX has the Entertainment Package, featuring DVD rear entertainment with 9″ screens, wireless headphones, and heated rear seats. Final tally of our fully loaded MDX was $54,965USD, including delivery.

The Acura MDX has its own unique corner of the premium-SUV market. In considering the car, I was reminded of the student I’m sure we all had in our class-the guy who earned excellent grades, excelled on the athletic field, with a reputation as a friendly, trusting, approachable fellow. Those buyers seeking a premium SUV that goes for class over flash will take well the MDX’s demeanor, so it is no surprise it is Acura’s best selling vehicle in the US. And how does it stack up against the competition? Its most obvious rival is the Lexus RX, which outsells the Acura 2:1. While the Lexus may offer more panache and recognition at the country club, the Acura has a third row seat, which you cannot have on the Lexus. As for a BMW X5 or Mercedes ML-Class, you would spend a fortune more to have a vehicle equipped as our MDX was. But if the satisfaction of the competence, comfort, and handling performance of a premium ‘ute are all you desire without announcing on a megaphone you have “made it” to the neighbors, The Acura MDX is a must-see on your shopping list.

2012 Volvo XC60

For Swedish performance aficionados who remember the Volvo R sedans and wagons from the ’90s and early 2000s, Volvo’s recent R-Design packages left much to be desired. Rather than increase power, those add-ons were being limited to stiffer suspension bits, flashy wheels, and sportier interior and exterior trim. Somewhere a pale yellow 850R wagon may be cracking a smile, though, as Volvo’s upcoming 2012 S60 R-Design and XC60 R-Design mark the return of power upgrades to the Volvo fold.

Both vehicles gain 25 hp and 29 lb-ft of torque, bumping output of Volvo’s ubiquitous T6 turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six to 325 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. We clocked the 300-hp S60 T6 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds and a 281-hp XC60 T6 AWD (the XC60 got the 300-hp T6 for 2011) in 6.5; the R-Design models should certainly improve on those figures. All the grunt gets routed to the pavement through a six-speed autobox and Volvo’s all-wheel-drive system. Instead of using a trick torque-vectoring differential, Volvo’s Corner Traction Control uses the stability-control system to help handling by braking the inside wheel during cornering, transferring power to the outside wheel.

Already the most entertaining Volvo steer in some time, the rest of the S60's R-Design-ification includes the addition of a front strut-tower brace, monotube rear dampers, stiffened and lower springs all around, and stiffer rear suspension bushings. The attitude of the lower ride height is matched by a set of attractive 18-inch wheels, a more-aggressive front fascia with a piano-black grille, and a tasteful rear lip spoiler that lives above a pair of larger tailpipes. The XC60 R-Design has existed since last year, albeit sans the more powerful engine, and so it already had the stiffened suspension, quicker steering ratio, and sporty trim bits that are now being added to the S60 version. The interiors of both cars have R-Design steering wheels, icy-cool blue-hued gauges, and more-supportive sport seats.

Of course, the full suite of Volvo’s latest safety tech is available, including Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake and Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake—both radar-based systems can slow or stop the car if it determines a collision with a pedestrian or other object is imminent. City Safety, which can slow or stop the car from up to 19 mph in the face of an impending collision, is standard on both R-Design models. Pricing comes in at $43,150 for the S60 R-Design and $44,025 for the XC60 R-Design. Volvo may have largely turned its back on performance in recent years, but these two R-Designs seem to prove that the engineers in Gothenburg still care about more than avoiding accidents.

2012 Ford Focus ST

The production version of the 2012 Ford Focus ST, the spiritual successor to the Focus SVT, made its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show, underscoring the new global approach that the company is taking not only to its mass-market entries, but also to its performance products.

The Focus ST will be sold in over 40 markets including the U.S. and promises stepped up performance and handling over the standard model thanks to suspension upgrades and a 2.0-liter Ecoboost turbocharged inline-4 producing 247 bhp and 265 lb.-ft. of torque.

While the ST will be offered in all markets as a 5-door hatch, Europeans will also be able to opt for the ST package on wagons.

The heart of the ST (which stands for Sport Technologies) is the lightweight aluminum-block engine featuring high-pressure direct injection, a low-inertia turbocharger that spins up to speed quickly, and independently acting variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust sides of the engine. The new powerplant replaces the 2.5-liter inline-5 of the previous European ST and offers better performance.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with revised gear ratios to take advantage of the Ecoboost engine’s increased output.

Emphasis on Driving Dynamics

The 2012 Ford Focus ST employs a variety of technologies to increase the car’s agility without sacrificing ride quality. As managing torque steer on a front-drive chassis always represents a challenge, Ford addresses this with its new Torque Steer Compensation System. Rather than limiting torque to the front wheels, the TSC works in concert with the car’s electric-assist power steering (EPAS) to counteract torque steer. This system applies the brakes to the inner wheel in cornering to reduce understeer in both power-on and power-off conditions.

Overall the suspension has been tuned using upgraded shock and spring settings, which help lower the ST’s ride height for a lower center of gravity and a more aggressive look The rear suspension has been revamped with new suspension knuckles, and there’s also a new anti-roll bar design.

Muscular Looks, Inside and Out

The Focus ST’s performance attributes are borne out by the car’s look. In addition to being lower, the car has a muscular look thanks to meaty 18-in. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tires mounted on alloy rims. The car also features a new one-piece trapezoidal grille opening, side skirts, rear diffuser vents and a roof spoiler. The ST will be available in a new color, Tangerine Scream, along with more traditional Performance Blue, Race Red and White.

Inside, the cabin is fitted with Recaro sport seats, specially designed pedals, a sport steering wheel and gearshift. Sculpted rear bench seats use extra padding to give the rear passengers additional support.

In Europe, this Focus will be launched in three trim levels: ST1, ST2 and ST3. Sales in the U.S. are expected as early as next summer.

Citroën is extending its C4 range with the introduction of the New Citroën C4 AIRCROSS. It is designed to cater for those customers looking for a little extra space and some off-road capability. The car will go on sale in the UK beginning second half of 2012.

Engine and specification:

Engine choices include 113bhp 1.6-litre and 148bhp 2.0-litre petrol engines, while 108bhp 1.6-litre HDi and 148bhp 1.8-litre HDi engines complete the range. The diesels engine is mated to a manual six-speed gearbox, while the petrol engine ones will get a five-speed box.

Great tires can do wonders for the car. For that basis, Citroen has included a set of 18-inch wheels for the Citroen C4 Aircross.

The entry level model will comprise front-wheel drive only, while all other editions will be eqquiped with a smart switchable four-wheel drive system. A small toggle behind the gear lever lets the driver to choose one of three modes. A two-wheel drive setting is designed to take full advantage of fuel consumption during normal on-road conditions, a four-wheel drive setting juggles torque between the front and rear axles for maximum traction and a third mode locks both axles for handling with more severe off-road conditions.

In terms of equipment, it includes GPS navigation with touch-screen, reversing camera and USB or Bluetooth connection for portable audio players. Its vertical LED running lights will give it a distinctive appearance in your rear-view mirror.

The five-seat C4 Aircross is 4340mm long, 1800mm wide and 1630mm high. A portion of the roof is produced with a large panoramic glass. It heightens the sense of space of the C4 Aircross. Toyota has remained tight lipped, but a refreshed 2012 Tacoma is already said to go on sale in October, so chances that we are looking at the real deal are good.

Toyota desperately needs this refreshed model in order to keep too many young buyers from switching to the Colorado and Dakota. The design is fresh and shows clear inspiration from the 4Runner’s grille, while many improvement are expected in the interior department.

However, no info is available on the engine changes, and we’re concerned this will be taken completely from the 2011 model year.

This bad-boy really need a dual VVT-i 4.0 V6 and some six-speed automatic magic to help with the economy. The unit is already in the 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and Tundra, so the heart transplant looks like a sure thing.

Sales of the Tacoma are still good, so there was no need for Toyota to pump its tight cash into their pickup, especially seeing as a new generation might come in about three years.

The redesign looks OK, but it was already one of the best looking models of its kind, and improving it is hard. The hood looks more angular and flattened, yet overall, few people will be able to spot the differences.

Mini is embarking on a proliferation binge, with its lineup doubling from the three models offered today—three-door hatch, convertible, and extended Clubman—to six within the next couple years. With a roadster and coupe just around the corner, a crossover, previewed by the Crossover and Beachcomber concepts, is also on the way. After many confusing reports of possible names here and there and everywhere, we now know it will be called the Countryman, at least in some places, the U.S. included.

Our first official look at photos of the Countryman has us breathing a collective sigh of relief. Although the beefed-up visual elements of the front end carry over from the two concepts, the detailing surrounding them has been toned down. Mini’s signature styling elements—a softly rounded body tub; an upright, blacked-out greenhouse; the angle-cut hood opening—translate very nicely to a crossover, and we are pleased to see that the Clubman’s contrasting rear trim remains exclusive to that model. The stance and taller hood add just enough toughness to set the crossover apart from Mini’s other offerings without looking contrived.

Inside will be more of the same, which is fine with us. The more toggle switches automakers use instead of black plastic buttons, the merrier. Four individual seats will be standard, with a three-across rear bench a no-cost option. Rear seats will slide fore and aft —the bench in a 60/40 split —and fold individually (or in 40/20/40 increments with the bench). Between both the front and rear seats runs the center-rail system seen on the Crossover and Beachcomber concepts, to which Mini affixes cup holders, armrests, and other "travel utensils." The interior otherwise appears to be standard Mini fare, and there is no artificial-horizon gauge, as there was on the Beachcomber concept.

Mechanical specifications will be identical to the rest of the Mini range, with other parts of the world seeing a choice of five engines split between diesel and gasoline power. Sadly, when it comes to the transmission, the GT only comes with a 4-speed automatic and the only model to come with optional manual 5-speed is the GS. Who ever decided to make the GT automatic should be at the very least poked in the eye. Gas mileage is less than eye-opening as well with an estimated 20 city and 28 highway. With all this disappointment comes some good news. Mitsubishi has decided to install 650 watts of audio equipment from Rockford Fosgate into every model except the GS.

As written out in my earlier statements the Eclipse is and has been an entry-level sports car, which in other words means it’s a teenager’s beater car. The engine will only give the driver enough juice to get to 80 while the transmission won’t let you get to the left-lane of the interstate. The interior is meant more for the simple-minded with its blue gauges and lack of digital instrumentation. When it comes to the 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse, we are sad to say we’ll pass. Now if they were more like the 1999 Eclipse version, with an added turbo, we may reconsider.

Where it comes up short is where it matters most to the enthusiast, and that's why we downgrade it a bit.

Performance, first and foremost, is a very mixed bag. In one hand, it's a light, surprisingly nimble, and well-balanced chassis. On the other, the steering is beyond dreadful in its lack of feel. We'd even go so far as to say it is the least-connected car we've driven this year, particularly once you push the pace past six or seven tenths. Approach a full ten-tenths run and you probably won't again. It's not rewarding, it's hard to predict, and it just isn't enjoyable at the limit. The brakes are really quite good, though.

Around town, in easier driving, it's a different story. The Fiat 500 has enough pep to be fun, flowing easily with traffic for the most part, and even handling interstate romps pretty well. It's handy, can be parked almost anywhere, and it's really, very cute. It will get noticed.

You'll notice its efficient little 101-horsepower, 1.4-liter four-cylinder at the pump, too. Rated at 40 mpg, it's not very thirsty even for the modern crop of minicars, and with the economy as uncertain as ever and everyday gas prices over $3 per gallon, that's something you can bank on.

Inside, it's mostly good news, though that rear seat is little more than lip service for the average American. Set your packages back there and resolve yourself to owning a two-seater. The front seats aren't much better, with those of us over six feet likely to feel the tall roof looming near above our heads, thanks to the high seats. The hatch area is likewise very small. But hey, this is a subcompact. Spaces are going to be tight. The materials, on the other hand, are mostly good, and the colorful, clever cabin design is refreshing in a way that doesn't feel like it'll be dated by next spring.

Standard equipment, at least in terms of comforts, is about on par with that of budget-conscious small cars; features on all models include power windows, power mirrors, a CD player, and tilt steering. Under both hoods
The SLS AMG’s compact cloth fabric top was chosen for three reasons: Its light weight compared to a folding metal roof, its trim folded dimensions and its unique style. Capable of stowing away in just 11 seconds, it can be operated at speeds up to 31 mph.

Unlike the gullwing, the Roadster’s doors open traditionally with little pomp and circumstance. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t impressive inside.

Under the roof, things are mostly standard SLS AMG. That’s to say that the car draws inspiration from the original 300SL Gullwing of the 1950s, a legendary racing and road car that is highly valued by collectors today. The dashboard is retro-modern, with all the latest Mercedes-Benz luxuries and high-grade materials and trim that can be tailored to an individual buyer’s tastes.

The engine is front-mid mounted, meaning it lies as close to the center of the vehicle as possible, which helps AMG achieve a 47/53 weight distribution. A broad track – 66.2 inches up front and 65.1 inches out back – improves grip and control.

In the front is an aggressive form of Hyundai's signature hexagonal front grille, hood scoop detailing, and unique Hyundai-signature LED position lights. Optional packages add a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights, and a massive panoramic sunroof.

In profile the Hyundai Veloster features "Fluidic Sculpture" character lines, muscular wheel arches, bodycolor door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Hyundai Veloster comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels and offers two types of 18-inch wheels. The top-of-the-line 18-inch wheel comes with painted inserts, a segment first.

Hyundai Veloster's dynamic rear design has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centered chrome exhaust tips and black lower fascia that complements the assertive front fascia.

Inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console mirrors the seat of a bike. Metallic accents abound throughout the interior. Alloy pedals and a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are also available.

THE THIRD DOOR

Hyundai Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while also incorporating an additional passenger-side door. In the past, some coupes have used smaller rear-hinged access doors. These coupes have always been compromised by having to open the driver-side door before the rear door could be opened, proving to be inconvenient for both the driver and passenger, and extremely difficult to operate in tight parking lot situations. Hyundai's fresh take here implements a conventionally hinged door on the passenger side of the Hyundai Veloster, providing safe and ready access to the surprisingly spacious rear seats. The passenger-side rear door handle is hidden to maintain the coupe design.

GAMMA 1.6-LITER GDI ENGINE

The all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). GDI technology helps deliver estimated highway fuel economy of up to 40 mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability.

"Gasoline-direct-injection technology allowed Hyundai engineers to create an engine that is powerful, fuel-efficient, and has fewer emissions," said Hyundai American Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) powertrain director, John Juriga. "Despite its small size, it generates some big numbers, with both impressive horsepower output and up to 40 mpg on the highway."

Through the use of GDI, the Gamma 1.6-liter engine delivers an estimated peak output of 138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 lb.-ft. at 4,850 rpm. But GDI is only part of the story as the new Gamma also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating.

NEW SIX-SPEED DUAL-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION

Hyundai's commitment to making the Gamma engine extremely fuel efficient continues by pairing it with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an all-new, six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) developed by Hyundai.

Hyundai's new DCT takes the benefits of a manual transmission, including low fuel consumption and sporty driving, and blends them with automatic transmission benefits, such as high comfort levels and smooth shift quality. In addition, the DCT enables direct connection for high efficiency and uninterrupted torque transfer during shifts. Automatic transmissions lose power and fuel economy in the torque converter.

Other improvements of a DCT over a traditional automatic include a five to six percent improvement in fuel efficiency as well as a three to seven percent improvement in acceleration performance.

Hyundai Veloster's DCT can be thought of as two traditional manual transmissions, each with its own clutch operating in parallel and alternating shifts. Hyundai Veloster is a six-speed with one clutch acting on gears one, three and five and the other used for two, four, six and reverse. This shifting process results in quick smooth transitions with none of the efficiency loss normally associated with torque convertors. The clutch actuator assembly features electric motors for actuation, and an external damper improves NVH.

This powertrain also has an Active Eco mode which modifies engine and transmission control for improved fuel economy that translates into more than a seven percent improvement in real-world fuel economy.

WORLD-CLASS WEIGHT EFFICIENCY

World-class weight efficiency is a program target for all Hyundai models. This strategy delivers outstanding fuel economy and performance simultaneously. At just 2,584 pounds, Hyundai Veloster is more than 400 pounds lighter than the Scion tC. This priority on weight efficiency allows the Hyundai Veloster to deliver a great combination of agility, performance, and fuel efficiency.

FUN TO DRIVE

The Hyundai Veloster is fitted with a McPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and a 24 mm diameter front stabilizer. The rear suspension is a light-weight V-torsion beam, a Hyundai-first with an integrated 23 mm stabilizer bar to allow bracing of the arms for greater stiffness and to further control body roll. The rear suspension also uses monotube shock absorbers for ride comfort.

Hyundai Veloster features sport-tuned electric power steering that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system. ADVANCED STANDARD SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES: PART OF HYUNDAI'S ASSURANCE COMMITMENT

Veloster has an exceptional level of standard safety features for the sporty car segment. Hyundai Veloster has a Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system which optimally manages ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS).

VSM works to control two effects. The first is when a driver accelerates or brakes on a split-mu surface (slippery on one side, dry pavement on the other) and the vehicle wants to pull in one direction. VSM detects this condition and sends a signal to the MDPS to apply steering assist. VSM counters the pull and automatically provides eight Newton meters of counter steering. In the digital age everyone wants to be connected to their electronics at all times, so Hyundai Veloster comes standard with a multifunction seven-inch touch-screen display. At engine start-up, the screen comes to life with a Hyundai Veloster image and a unique sound. There are three interface layouts the user can choose from.

Pandora internet radio is integrated into Hyundai Veloster. The display screen has a Pandora icon to stream internet radio from an iPhone, Android or Blackberry. One of the display's unique features is an Eco Coach scoring system. The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid is largely unchanged from last year. A couple of cosmetic tweaks here and there is about all. Few will notice the difference, but why fix what isn’t broken?

The Toyota Camry has been our sedan of choice for over ten years. For the past nine, it has been the country’s best selling passenger vehicle. While that’s a great thing for Toyota, it does say something about us as a society.

That our favorite car is an ordinary, run of the mill, sensible sedan car. Fortunately we’re here to review the car, not have a sociological discussion!

The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid has distinct advantages over most other hybrids with perhaps the exception of the Fusion. It’s almost exactly the same as a normal car, with none of the downsides of hybrid technology. It’s slightly more expensive than the normal Camry, but not enough to put you off buying one.

That means families in the market for a new Camry can go hybrid without even having to think about it. The interior is the same, the quality and reliability are the same, the car is essentially the same on the surface. That makes it a winner.

The 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine is as smooth as anything Toyota have made. It produces 147 bhp and 138 lb-ft of torque. It works with the electric motor, which produces a further 40 bhp. The energy is sent to the front wheels via a CVT transmission.

Offering 33/34 miles per gallon has earned the Camry hybrid the Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) ticket. That’s good news for the marketing department, but doesn’t make much difference to the owner.

They are more interested in the real-life gains from the increased gas mileage.

The inside of the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid is okay. It’s well-built, the materials are of a decent quality, and everything is in the right place. The use of blue LED lights for the dashboard and interior lighting is a nice touch.

The seats are comfortable and supportive, and have enough head and legroom for even the tallest people. Even in the rear there is still room for almost everyone. The Camry will comfortably sit five without too many compromises.

Trunk space is limited by the large battery pack that sits in the corner. It reduces the available space from 15 cubic feet down to a little under 11. That’s still enough room for the groceries, but one of the few shortcomings of a hybrid.

The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition and entry, an eight-way power driver seat, a 60/40-split rear seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming rear view mirror, trip computer and a six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo.

The experience of driving and owning the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid is pretty much the same as owning a standard one. The gas engine is capable and refined, and the electric motor adds some well needed boost.

The electric motor can also run independently when there are low power demands. That means under 30 miles an hour, or when cruising, the car can run on electric power alone. That is another serious advantage this car has over its hybrid rivals. Not all of them can run on electric without the gas engine providing power.

The steering and suspension are the only negatives of this review. Cornering the Camry is similar to doing it in a speedboat. The body rolls, the corner seems to take forever and there isn’t that much feedback from the wheel. Changing direction is a little lifeless, and doesn’t provide enough information through the wheel to the driver.

However, considering that is the only downside to the whole deal, it shouldn’t put prospective buyers off the car.

As the Camry is the best-selling sedan in the country, the hybrid version is likely to follow that trend. With competition in the hybrid market hotting up, there may be discounts to be had. New car deals may be less obvious than usual, but the market is too sluggish and the competition too close to not have them.

The all-new Charger will once again receive a slight makeover later this fall, although this time it'll get musclecar mascara from Chrysler's Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team. Not only is the new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 more powerful than the last go-fast rendition, but according to preliminary test data, it's more efficient, too.

The new SRT8 Charger's improved efficiency is achieved in part by the addition of Chrysler's adaptive valve exhaust system and Fuel Saver technology. The latter switches the all-new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 into a four-cylinder mode that's activated over a wider rpm range, thus minimizing consumption. By exactly how much has yet to be announced, but for a reference point, the last Challenger SRT8 powered by the 6.1-liter V-8 was rated 13/19 mpg city/highway. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft on the 2012 Charger SRT8 optimize low-end grunt for even more speed when you want it.

Each of the SRT8's 465 horses and 465 pound-feet of torque are routed to sticky 20-inch rear rubber through the brand's well worn W5A580 AutoStick five-speed automatic. Yes, we know, it's no pistol-grip six-speed manual (say, from the Challenger SRT8 392), or even a six-speed slushbox, but SRT has included a first-ever paddle shifting function to make the aging tranny more entertaining.

Even with the questionable gearbox in place, Chrysler reckons the SRT8 can sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in the high-4 second range, achieve 0.88 g on the skidpad, and top out at an estimated 175 mph. Quarter-mile times should be in the high-12 second range, Chrysler says.

Good thing there are four-piston Brembos to clamp down hard on 14.2-inch front/13.8-inch rear slotted rotors. The massive binders utilize Chrysler's Ready Alert Braking system that positions pads closer to the rotors when a collision is anticipated by onboard telemetry. Each corner also gets redesigned 20-inch forged aluminum wheels that sport black accents to emphasize their mirror-like faces.

An SRT first, the adaptive damping suspension adjusts stiffness levels based on driver inputs and road conditions. When left in Auto mode, the suspension's ECU calibrates all four corners to a softer level; toggle to Sport for a tauter road feel. Engineers installed a beefier power steering system for direct, yet livable communication.

The sedan's Coke-bottle lines are slightly modified with the addition of a full SRT body kit. SRT designers also had a hand in transforming the passenger environment into one fit for a sport-oriented driver. Uniquely bolstered, stitched, and branded SRT adjustable front bucket seats are vented and heated. To assure that rear passengers aren't jealous, the backseat bench is heated too. Carbon fiber-themed trim pieces replace some of the regular Charger's plastic bits. A 900-watt 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with Uconnect and an 8.4-inch touch screen duly entertains riders when they're not enjoying the sedan in corners. Like the Challenger SRT8 392, the giant central display can be configured to show Performance Pages, essentially all the juicy stats gearheads love to see and measure (like 0-60 mph, average g forces, and quarter-mile times).

Expect the Charger SRT8 to arrive replete with premium bells and whistles as the car will top the lineup. Notable features include keyless Enter-N-Go, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. Complete specifications and details (including fuel economy and power stats) will arrive in the coming weeks, but we think it's safe to say that the 2012 Charger has been thoroughly recharged.

The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover that blends distinctive design with outstanding efficiency. 2.4L direct injection engine helps the Chevrolet Equinox deliver expected best-in-segment estimated highway fuel economy of 30 mpg (EPA certification pending) - a 25-percent improvement over the previous model. Chevrolet expects nearly two-thirds of customers will choose the efficient, 2.4L engine.

Its exterior design inspiration from the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover; and like those vehicles, the new Equinox complements its styling with attention to detail and unexpected features, according to Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.

The vehicle highlights:
* New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 255 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups
* Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags
* Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control
* Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio
* "Smart" remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature

The design details :
Designed features Chevy's signature global face - the two-tier grille and prominent gold Bowtie insignia. Strong fender shapes, a distinctive premium roofline, wraparound headlamps and dual round taillamps are additional elements that define Equinox as a true Chevrolet, Peper said.

Design features:
* A multi-dimensional hood and wraparound rear side glass and a wheels-at-the-corners stance
* Improved aerodynamic performance through a number of carefully designed exterior features, including moving the base of the windshield forward approximately three inches (75 mm) for a sleeker profile

The Chevy Equinox's rocker panels are integrated into the doors to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. They narrow the area over which a passenger must step, offering protection for pant legs that could brush against dirty rockers. The select use of chrome trim and flush-fitting "exposed-edge" windshield and rear glass reinforce Equinox's build quality and reduce wind noise.

Dimensionally, the Chevrolet Equinox rides on the same 112.5-inch wheelbase (2,857 mm), but is about one inch (25 mm) shorter in length and an inch wider. It also has a wider front track that enhances the ride and handling.

The interior amenities, storage and flexibility
Inside, the Chevrolet Equinox features attention to detail - including a number of storage bins, such as an oversized glove box; a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack; and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.

A "floating" center stack houses a multitude of ergonomic comfort and convenience controls. Contemporary, ice-blue ambient lighting - featured within and surrounding the center stack, encircling the center-console cupholders and within the door pull cups - accentuates the cabin. The front and rear seats, which include cloth and uplevel, perforated leather-trimmed offerings, were developed to help deliver best-in-class comfort.

The new Equinox retains its MultiFlex rear seat capability, which allows the seat to be moved fore or aft nearly eight inches (203 mm), for the best rear legroom in its class. With the 60/40-split-back rear seat moved all the way forward, the cargo area offers 31.4 cubic feet (889 liters) of storage.

The Chevy Equinox's cabin is notable for its quietness. Noise-absorbing elements are built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior.

Convenience, infotainment and connectivity
The variety of technologies are integrated in the Chevrolet Equinox, such as an available seven-inch touch-screen navigation system.
Additional features also include:

* USB audio connectivity
* DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system with two independent screens to enable DVD viewing on one and gaming on the other
* Internal memory/hard drive on uplevel radios for storing audio selections

* Rear-vision camera system, with display in the rearview mirror or in the navigation screen
* Range of premium-feature audio systems with up to eight speakers and 250 watts of output

Chassis and suspension
The Equinox is built on a body-integral structure with single-piece body side stampings and targeted applications of high-strength steel. Those elements form the foundation of a solid, quiet driving experience, according to Peper. The strong structure enabled engineers to tune the four-wheel-independent suspension system for greater control and driver feedback.

* Fuel-saving electric power steering system

The rack-mounted electric power steering system provides greater fuel efficiency of on 2.4L-equipped models that saves nearly 11 miles per tank of gas, or about 572 miles per year (assuming one fill-up per week). With the Equinox's estimated 30 mpg on the highway, the electric power steering system saves the equivalent of approximately one tank of gas each year.

Porsche has quietly announced U.S. pricing information for the 2011 Cayenne, on their American consumer website.

Starting at $46,700 (the version with the 8-speed automatic goes for $49,700), the Cayenne features a 3.6-liter V6 with 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. The sport-ute accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds (7.4 with the automatic) and has a top speed of 142 mph (229 km/h).

The Cayenne S starts at $63,700 and boasts a 4.8-liter V8 with 395 hp (294 kW / 400 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 160 mph (258 km/h).

If you want performance and fuel efficiency, Porsche offers the $67,700 Cayenne S Hybrid. It features a 328 hp (245 kW / 333 PS) supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a 46 hp (35 kW / 47 PS) electric motor. Expected to return 28.7 mpg (official EPA numbers haven't been released), the S Hybrid runs from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds and tops out at 150 mph (241 km/h).

The $104,800 Cayenne Turbo is powered by a twin-turbo 4.8-liter V8 with 493 hp (368 kW /500 PS) and 516 lb-ft (699 Nm) of torque. It rockets from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, before maxing out at 172 mph (277 km/h).

The Peugeot 308 GTi come with the same 1.6 litre THP 147 kW (200 PS) engine that will be featured in the RCZ coupe model. That engine makes the 308 GTI competitive with the 155 kW (211 PS) of the Golf GTI - the benchmark GTI for this segment.

The THP engine, fitted with a twin-Scroll turbocharger and a high pressure direct-injection system with VTi technology (variable valve and timing injection), produces 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) of torque and will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes 7.7 seconds while fuel consumption will be 6.9 liters/100 km and CO2 emissions 159 g/km.

A sound system technology has also been employed to make sure the engine rumble provides for just the right sporty sound that customers will be looking for.

For the proper GTi ride the 308's front MacPherson suspension gets larger bearings with specific damper settings for the 22 mm rods (20 mm in the standard car). The rear torsion beam suspension also gets the same damper treatment.

On the outside are 18-inch wheels with 225/40 R18 tires, a rear spoiler, a lowered rear bumper fitted to a black (Perla Nera) diffuser and dual chrome exhaust pipes. The front fascia also gets a lowering panel borrowed from the 308 CC and a carbon-style insert beneath the front bumper.

GTi-badges are featured on the side and rear of the car.

On the interior are an aluminum foot rest and gear knob and a leather sport steering wheel.

The Skoda Fabia vRS goes on sale in the United Kingdom on 29 July for a recommended minimum OTR of £15,700. There is also an estate (combi) version to be made available for the first time. Powered by a 1.4 TSI engine with both supercharger and turbocharger, the vRS is the fastest production Fabia that Skoda has ever brought out of the factory.

Maximum power is 132 kW (178 bhp / 180 PS) at 6,200rpm and peak torque is 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) between 2,000rpm and 4,500rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox which helps it accelerate from 0 - 62mph in 7.3 seconds for both the hatch and the estate. Average fuel consumption comes to 45.6 mpg-UK (6.2l / 100km).

A set of 17-inch ‘Gigaro' alloy wheels with 205/40 R17 84W tyres appears both up front and at the rear. Other exterior highlights include LED daylight running lights, rear chrome double exhaust pipe and a rear spoiler. Running gear includes ESP, Hill Hold Control and XDS (Electronic Differential System).

The interior is equipped with vRS sports seats, paddles, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with radio controls, an 8-speaker sound system and MDI (Multi-device interface) amongst others.
